The Lights Around the Lake

Late spring on a high mountain lake

a single beam, ether pale,
the reflected light of Venus
venturing onto a high mountain lake,
a surface as smooth as oiled leather

lanterns shine through snow-drooped
boughs of ponderosa pine
and when the night winds rise,
the lanterns flicker and gleam
like angels of whispering light

in the morning the wind
sends the snow aloft
snowflakes sailing about
like milkweed seeds

a shimmering cloud
of refracted sunlight that
I walk beneath and
breathe in tiny rainbows

Thanks for reading…
